3 reasons car accidents increase during the holidays

One of the most anticipated times of the year is the holiday season. It is also the time of year when more people are traveling to visit their loved ones. With significantly more cars on the road, there are more chances of accidents occurring.

However, that’s not the reason why car accidents tend to increase during the holidays. Our team of California and Texas car accident attorneys at MVP Accident Attorneys has put together a list of reasons why car accidents are more common during the holidays.

#1: DRUNK DRIVING

Holidays are a time to celebrate and spend time with your loved ones. Many people consume alcohol during the holidays, and unfortunately, some drink and drive. These people put their life and the life of others in danger--increasing the number of car accidents that occur during holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has data that shows how the number of deaths resulting from drunk driving experiences a dramatic increase during specific times of the year. Most are during the summer months, as well as the holiday season. It is worth noting that during December, each day averages approximately 45 deaths from alcohol-impaired driving.

According to data from the NHTSA, the demographic with the highest level of alcohol-impaired driving is between the ages of 21 and 24. An intoxicated driver is a negligent driver. Those injured because of a drunk driver can be held liable for their negligent behavior.

#2: FATIGUED DRIVING

All too often, fatigued drivers cause car accidents as a result of exhaustion. This occurs when people are driving long hours to spend the holiday season with friends and family. When a driver is aware of the risks, it provides a chance to take charge of their driving behavior proactively. Fatigued driving is just as dangerous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

There is a significant amount of things to do and plan for during the holiday season. This includes attending holiday parties, shopping, running errands as well as decorating, and more.

These situations increase the chance of unsafe driving practices and falling asleep at the wheel. Anyone who plans to drive a long distance should make sure they get a full night's sleep. This should always be done before leaving for a trip. Additionally, regular intermittent rest breaks must be taken when driving long distances.

#3: AGGRESSIVE DRIVING

Drivers in Southern California know how hectic traffic can be, especially during the holidays. When a person is driving long-distance, it’s common for them to become impatient and anxious to get to their destination.

Unfortunately, some individuals will respond by driving at an unsafe speed, tailgating, making dangerous lane changes, and other types of aggressive driving. Doing this increases the chances of an accident. MVP Accident Attorneys firm advises California and Texas residents to drive with caution so that they don’t put themselves, their passengers, and other drivers on the road at risk.
